I learned so much about the management and flow of large amounts of sensitive medical information that needs to be accessed instantly by those caring for the patient yet preserving patient confidentiality. I learned how security mechanisms are set up be less cumbersome yet provide a high level of protection. I also learned about the process to modify and protect information in large systems. I also learned the tips for keeping information protected and how to use the system for my own private use in a safe way.

Module 5
I was amazed at how the readings were able to clarify and draw attention to my own decision-making processes. Sometimes I am so busy that I would rush to judgment or stick with the status quo. Now I have a better sense of what should go in to decision making and feel more comfortable taking the time needed to have a rationale that is applicable that makes sense from different viewpoints. I also know that my decision-making ability needs to informed with good data and to surround myself with colleagues that I can trust and seek advice from for areas that I need. It was also informative to have the critical role of intuition described fully as this I feel is important to understand.

Module 4
I can’t imagine any nursing/health care providers who do not involve teaching. Every day, what I do with clients is teaching. I can’t imagine my professional role without not involving teaching. Teaching is a important part of our role. Most of teachings so far I have done are psycho-education about diseases, medications (psychotropic medications), and patient care teaching such as healthy behaviors, healthy diets, and crisis Interventions. Most time I use explanations, giving handouts so that clients have extra resources to look at. After the Module 4, I realize that I should invest more time to create fun and effective teaching methods to enhance learning. For example, I could have used color pictures of psychotropic medications to enhance clients’ learning visually. When I create handouts for teaching, I also can use variety of methods to increase effectiveness of teaching, maximizing learning capacity. Or I could search websites that may be helpful for clients that are met HON code criteria.

Module 3
I wanted to look for the treatment guideline related to co-morbidity of PTSD and Alcohol Dependence. When I used the EndNote, it brought up 118 articles related to PTSD and Alcohol Dependence. I still have to sift through quality articles and when I tried to find a full text, it retrieved only 17 full texts of articles and four full texts of articles are related to the topics. I also used the National Guideline Clearing House, which retrieved only 12 articles related to PTSD and Alcohol Dependence. However, only four of 12 articles were the treatment guidelines related to co-morbidity of PTSD and Alcohol Dependence. The Google search is easy and convenient to search information related to the topics in diverse sources, but the quality of information needs to be examined due to an easy access that anyone can post information in a web search. When I entered the key words”PTSD and Alcohol Dependence and treatment Guideline”, I got over 264,000 results. When I entered the same key words in the PubMed, it brought up 1042 articles. However, I noticed that some articles are not related to topics that I was looking for. It is easy to retrieve numbers of articles in a short time, but I have to spend time sifting through to choose the quality articles. When I used the advance search by using the same key words, it retrieved 12 articles that were specifically related to topics. I think the PubMed is fast and easy to use for searching articles compared to other electronic indexes. Overall, I think an electronic index, a guideline index, and a web search engine are useful and have a unique quality for diverse resources for searching information. For example, when writing a term paper or a synthesis, you would enjoy using the EndNote by importing or exporting articles from other databases. If you are searching for a treatment, guideline related to a specific topic, the PubMED and the National Guideline Clearing House might be the better choice.

WEEK 2
I am so relieved that the first two weeks went smoothly. I am still figuring out how to organize my class schdules such as tests, assignments, and readings. Becuase I am hyper focued on things, I have difficulty in distrubuting my attention. In addition, I need to adjust to work extra clinical hours for this semester. I welcome good advice from you.
Last Friday, I started to participate in the LGBT-Q Group Therapy. Most of members are transgenders. I want to learn more about this population and hopefully gain understanding to help them in clinical practice. The first thing that I had to face was to be aware of belief and attitude of this popuplation. Is my understanding and my real reaction matched? Is my attitude consitent with my belief? It made me think about issues that I never thought about. I searched and got information from various resources- I found several support groups and communities;unfortunately some of them are not allowed to public. Anyway, there were so much information that is new to me and I am glad that the internet and wensites allow this service.

Module 1
Module1_Introduction
Hello, my name is Eunyoung Martineau. I am in the second year of PMHNP (Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Program)-I can’t believe how the first year went by. I am originally from Seoul, South Korea and have lived in Utah for five years. Before that, I lived in Vermont, Hawaii, New York, and Dominica. Even though I have lived in America for 18 years, I still struggle with English, so please be patient with my poor grammars. Currently, I am doing my Clinical Internship at the VA, Salt Lake City, Utah. I am married and have two sons (16 and 13). My previous profession (?) was a homemaker for 15 years. I am trying to build up my hobbies except watching Korean dramas.
My experience with information technology is from the VA where I do my internship. The VA has a system called CPRS and the CPRS allows us to access all kind of information related a patient such as MRI, X-rays, Labs result, distant medical records and so on. I am in the process of learning how to retrieve and integrate this information, which is very frustrating for me due to my lack of experience in computer. However, I am very hopeful because I will be a different person after taking N6004. Or am I expecting too much?
